Dear CHI Members and Friends

Are you CHI’s next Volunteer Coordinator? How about becoming our board secretary? Will you volunteer to monitor heritage policy? You may also join our board as a Director at Large and see where your talents take you on the quest for preserving Calgary’s Heritage.

The Calgary Heritage Initiative is seeking enthusiastic individuals to fill four volunteer positions, at least two of which are on our board. The CHI board consists of up to 15 members.

About the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society: Now in its 11th year, CHI is a grassroots membership organization dedicated to the preservation, productive use, and interpretation of buildings and sites of historic and architectural interest in Calgary. We are volunteers who love heritage, and want to share that with fellow Calgarians and future generations.

If you are interested in any of these positions, please send an email with your qualifications as soon as possible to Rick Williams rkwilliams@shaw.ca  and indicate the positon you are interested in, in the subject box.

  1. Volunteer Coordinator

Taking our inspiration from the National Trust for Canada’s goal for the country’s 150th, the Calgary Heritage Initiative proposes to “broaden our circle of supporters and public champions” through a three-year program of discovery and storytelling, but we can’t do that without engaged volunteers. Chi currently has over 100 members. Time commitments are variable and dependent on specific events or member engagement requirements; a minimum of 5 hours per month is suggested, including attending one committee meeting. A three year commitment, renewed annually, is suggested.

The Volunteer Coordinator:

  • Works with the membership director to maintain a list of volunteers. Recruits additional volunteers as needed.
  • Screens for skills and matches volunteers to requirements (eg, assistance at events, creating social media posts after events, photographing buildings and sites of historic interest, research, writing)
  • Works with CHI events, communications, and member engagement directors to fill volunteer requirements and schedule volunteers.
  • Orients volunteers to CHI and trains volunteers for specific tasks.
  • Tracks volunteer hours.
  • Evaluates volunteer satisfaction and effectiveness. Collects suggestions.
  • Thanks and recognizes volunteers annually.
  • Submits a brief monthly report to the Secretary of the Board of Directors.
  • Option to join the Board of Directors and attend monthly 2 hour meetings. Other board duties as required.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a passion for heritage preservation and some experience coordinating volunteers for non-profits or community associations.

  1. Secretary

CHI’s Secretary is a member of the Executive of our board of directors and works under the direction of the president of the society. Approximately 5 hours per month is required, including attending one board meeting. A three-year commitment, renewed annually, is suggested.

The Secretary:

  • Attends all monthly meetings of the board and the annual general meeting and takes accurate minutes.
  • Is responsible for maintaining the records of the Society, including minutes, agendas, committee reports, contact lists, correspondence, society status papers, and other documents as required.
  • Distributes agendas and minutes of the previous meetings.
  • Has authority to sign cheques for the Society.
  • Is sufficiently familiar with legal documents (articles, by-laws, correspondence, etc.) to note applicability during meetings.
  • Other board duties as required.

Qualifications: The ideal secretary should have a passion for heritage preservation and be adept at minute taking, file management and word processing. You are required to have your own computer and printer. Printing expenses will be reimbursed.

  1. Policy Watch

One of CHI’s function is to support the development of public policy that values heritage. A volunteer is being sought to monitor municipal, provincial and federal policy and identify opportunities for CHI to provide meaningful input. Typically, about a half dozen issues are followed each year; examples include municipal policy or community plans, designation, land use or development applications, the provincial Historic Resources Act, and federal or provincial legislation allowing incentives (e.g. tax credits) for heritage preservation. Time commitments are variable and dependent on current policy issues; a minimum of 5 hours per month is suggested, including attending one committee or board meeting. This is a 1 to 2 year commitment.

The Policy Watch volunteer:

  • Monitors applicable City of Calgary Council, Committee and Calgary Planning Commission meeting agendas, minutes, newsletters and reports.
  • Attends public consultations.
  • Observes Calgary Heritage Authority’s monthly meetings and/or reviews minutes.
  • Liaises with City of Calgary Heritage Planners, the Federation of Calgary Communities Urban Planner and heritage/planning committee volunteers on Community Association boards.
  • Keeps abreast of policy issues in the news (locally and in other jurisdictions such as Edmonton).
  • Proposes a position statement and actions that the CHI may take to influence policy decisions.
  • Updates CHI Fact Sheets as required.
  • Works with students on relevant research projects.
  • Submits a brief monthly report to the Secretary of the Board of Directors.
  • Option to join the Board of Directors and attend monthly 2 hour meetings. Other board duties as required.

Qualifications: The ideal volunteer should have a passion for heritage preservation and some familiarity with the City of Calgary’s policy planning and development approval processes. Alternatively, the volunteer may register for one or more free Partners in Planning courses (usually offered Saturday mornings).

Do you see yourself moving into a committee chair or board executive role? Join CHI as a Director at Large. Time commitment will be variable; a minimum of 4 hours per month is suggested including attending one CHI board meeting.
A three-year commitment is suggested, renewed annually.
