We are sharing this message on behalf of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues because we recognize the importance of having children in all neighbourhoods, including high density neighbourhoods. If you have any questions, please contact Ben at planning@calgarycommunities.com
Promoting Healthy Neighbourhoods by Ending Discrimination against Children in Housing
With the availability and cost of housing, an apartment or row housing may be the only affordable option for young families in all neighbourhoods. Unfortunately, a large portion of apartments and multi-unit housing projects in Alberta are adult-only. Alberta is one of the only provinces that still allows discrimination against children in accommodation – both rental and condo housing. Consequently, housing choices for families are limited.
This is a concern to neighbourhood organizations striving for healthy, vibrant, complete communities with long term residents, schools, housing and amenities to accommodate all ages and income levels. It is also a concern to citizens who believe that all members of society should have equal housing choices, including families with children.
Child Friendly Housing Coalition
Along with the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues, we were encouraged by the recent founding of the Child Friendly Housing Coalition of Alberta – a non-partisan coalition of people and organizations who wish to eliminate discrimination against children and their caregivers in multi-unit housing. We were also encouraged by a recent court ruling.
Opportunity for Change
The courts recently ruled that the Government of Alberta must amend the Human Rights Act to include ‘age’ as a protected ground in tenancy. There is no guarantee these amendments will protect children because ‘age’ is currently defined as 18+. Therefore, advocacy efforts are focused on ensuring children’s rights are included in the forthcoming amendments.
The Child Friendly Housing Coalition is asking that the Alberta Human Rights Act be amended to:
- include protection in tenancy for children (0-18);
- prohibit adult-only residential buildings and explicitly state that condominium corporations cannot discriminate;
- include NO exemptions other than for supportive housing serving vulnerable demographics with specialized needs (ex. Persons with Disabilities/seniors).
Do you support the mission of the Child Friendly Housing Coalition to end discrimination against children and their caregivers in housing? If so, it is important to let your MLA know. To make it easy, go to the Coalition’s website for a letter template or postcard. We also welcome you to share the link and encourage other supporters to contact their MLA as well.
