The following is a message from the City of Calgary

East Central Complete Street Network Project Update

The City of Calgary is planning complete street improvements in East Central Calgary that include a bicycle network, pedestrian enhancements and intersection upgrades.

This project was originally called a bikeways project so people were aware of the bicycle facilities that would be added to the road. We have changed the name to more accurately reflect the scope of the project, which includes improvements for all transportation modes, as laid out in The City’s Complete Streets Policy and Guide.

Throughout the year-long public engagement process, The City collected feedback about the project, including bicycle routes and facilities, and intersection and pedestrian improvements.

Changes to recommended bicycle network

The public helped The City identify two east-west bicycle routes and one north-south route, which make up the recommended network. Curb extensions and flashing pedestrian crossings will improve safety for people walking. Due to limited funding, The City will phase construction, beginning this summer.

Phase 1 – 2017

Phase 1 will be constructed this year, and includes one north-south route and one east-west route:

Phase 2 – 2018 (dependent on funding)

Phase 2 will be constructed when funding becomes available, and will include a second east-west route:

Next Steps

Detailed design is currently being completed on Phase 1 routes. The City will post final plans online when they are available and will communicate with stakeholders before and during construction, which will begin this summer.
