Re: Seeking Applicants for the Calgary Planning Commission
At its annual Organizational Meeting, City Council makes appointmens to various Boards, Commissions and Committees. The Calgary Planning Commission is seeking nominees to fill vacancies. Members are appointed by City Council for a two-year term. Council has requested that non-binding nominations for the appointment of the citizen members be obtained from the following organizations:
- Federation of Calgary Communities (residents at large)
- Alberta Association of Architects (architecture and urban design)
- APEGGA (engineering)
- Calgary Region Homebuilders Association (home building)
- Alberta Association of Landscape Architects (landscape architecture)
- Urban Development Institute (real estate development)
- Canadian Barr Association (real estate and/or planning law)
- Alberta Professional Planners Institute (urban planning)
As such, the Federation is seeking applicants to nominate to Council for the CPC role. Along with relevant experience and knowledge, the Federation considers applicants’ experience working with community issues and and community associations. Though the nominee will not represent the Federation, we look for someone to represent a “community perspective” on CPC.
Council selects CPC members from among nominees and applicants with expertise in the following areas or from other areas Council deems appropriate:
- Architecture
- Engineering
- Home building
- Landscape architecture
- Real estate development
- Real estate and/or planning law
- Urban design
- Urban planning
The term appointment will be for two years and is a volunteer position. The CPC meets bi-weekly on Thursdays for several hours at each meeting. In addition to attending meetings, members are expected to familiarize themselves with the meeting agenda and, if possible, conduct site visits prior to the meeting. Members may be contacted by development applicants, community associations, and other parties to CPC agenda items. The time commitment is therefore considerably more than the length of the CPC meetings themselves.
The Federation is asking interested persons to send an expression of interest to our office by midnight on Sunday, September 5th, 2016. Applicants can send a cover letter, and resume no longer than two pages to Carrie Yap via email to engageinplanning@calgarycommunities.com . Federation staff will contact selected candidates and will conduct interviews shortly after the deadline. Nominations and resumes for successful candidates will be sent to the City Clerk and be forwarded to the Organizational Meeting of Council for Council’s decision (Individuals may also apply to the City Clerk independently).
Information provided will only be used by City Council in consideration of these committee appointments. More information on the Calgary Planning Commission can be found here: http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/pd/Documents/brochures/calgary_planning_commission.pdf
