A message from the City of Calgary

On June 25, 2018, Council approved an opportunity for designated cannabis consumption areas in public spaces around the city. These areas would be exempted from the Cannabis Consumption Bylaw, which prohibits public consumption in all forms.

Ward Councillors or residents can begin the process to have a designated cannabis consumption area in their community. Residents may contact their Councillor to express interest or concern. Locations will be decided through a Public Hearing of Council, where citizens may speak.

There are currently no proposed consumption areas, however Councillors may ask Administration to look into potential areas in their ward. Potential designated spaces would be measured through criteria which would balance finding suitable, defined spaces with the overall well-being of communities.

Designated cannabis consumption areas would be identified through signage and easily recognizable infrastructure, which is yet to be determined. Areas would be equipped with waste bins, tamper-proof ashtrays, and would be confined to a defined radius. The Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer may temporarily suspend areas if there are safety or nuisance concerns.

Festivals and events in Calgary may apply to provide a designated cannabis consumption area, similar to a beer garden. Details will be available in the coming months.
