A message from the City of Calgary
The Glenmore Dam has been key part of Calgary’s water infrastructure system since the early 1930’s. The wear and tear the dam has experienced over 85 years of service, and the ever increasing demands of a growing city, mean the time has come for an extensive upgrade. These improvements will not only extend the life of the dam, but will help manage our drinking water supply and give us the ability to better control low and high river flows.
Below is the list of construction impacts that will affect the Dam and the surrounding pathway:
- The public pathway across the Glenmore Dam bridge deck will be closed from September 30th, 2017 until project completion (estimated spring 2020). A detour will be in place, and signage will be established prior to and during construction. A pathway detour map is attached.
- The primary work/laydown area will be located on the south side of Glenmore Dam – access to the site will be from 14th Street SW. Additional work areas will be established north of the dam – access to these will be through the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant North Gate, off of 50th Avenue SW.
- The Glenmore Reservoir may need to be lowered to facilitate certain components of construction – reservoir users have been engaged through City Recreation and updates will be issued accordingly.
- Construction vehicles, equipment and a laydown area for supplies will occupy only the defined work areas. The construction area will be fenced off for safety with no public access to these areas.
- Work will be performed from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturdays for approximately 2 ½ years. Periods of 24 hour activity are anticipated but are not expected to cause noise related issues.
- No impacts to traffic are expected.
Construction Duration: Construction is expected to take approximately 2 ½ years to complete and will begin September 2017.
