On Thursday, April 5th, Council held a public hearing and looked at a variety of issues relating to cannabis from the municipal perspective. Click here for background information on the City’s role in legalizing cannabis.

Public Consumption

Consuming cannabis on public property, whether done through, smoking, vaping, or edibles, will be illegal. There will be an exemption for medical users. Consumption in retail stores will also not be allowed. Rental landlords and condo boards can also restrict cannabis usage in rental properties and condos. Council has asked administration to look at opportunities for creating designated cannabis consumption areas. We will update you accordingly.

Land Use Restrictions

Cannabis retailers will have to be at least 150 metres from schools and emergency shelters. They also cannot be located beside daycares. Motions to restrict cannabis retailers from pawn shops and other uses did not pass.
